Targeting Yellowfin Tuna: Proven Jig Colors & Techniques from Captain Jerry Malanga

With the recent closure to Bluefin fishing, many offshore anglers are shifting their focus to Yellowfin and the bite is on. At UVT Fishing, we’ve got the jigs to keep you hooked up.

We asked La Familia Captain Jerry Malanga of Shore Catch Charters (Eastbound & Reel Freedom) for his go-to jig colors and when to use them. Here’s what he had to say.

Morning & Low Light Conditions

  • Best Colors: Shore Catch (Full Glow) Pink Bubble Gum or (Full Glow) Electric Chicken

  • Why It Works: The glow profile and bright colors stand out in lower light and overcast conditions, drawing aggressive strikes from Yellowfin feeding near the surface.

Late Morning or Squid Bite

  • Best Color: Sardine

  • Why It Works: Matches the flash and movement of smaller baitfish and squid. This natural pattern is ideal when Yellowfin are actively feeding but light levels are higher.

Midday & Bright Sun

  • Best Color: Sand Eel

  • Why It Works: The slimmer, natural profile blends into clear water and sunny conditions, matching the hatch when Yellowfin are dialed in on sand eels.

Color selection matters as much as presentation. Change colors based on light and bait presence, the right choice can turn a slow day into a hot bite.

Yellowfin season is in full swing, make sure your jig box is ready.
