Frequently Asked Questions About

UVT Tuna Jigs

Every UVT Tuna Jig comes rigged and ready to fish with BKK 5X assist hooks, rounded solid rings, and a body cast from stamped lead. Below are straight answers to the questions anglers ask us most, from how the hardware is built to which jig to drop and where to fish it.

Hooks & Hardware

What hooks are on UVT Tuna Jigs?

UVT Tuna Jigs are rigged with BKK 5X assist hooks. BKK 5X hooks are built for strength, so they hold up to powerful fish like bluefin and yellowfin tuna while staying sharp trip after trip.

Why are UVT assist hook cords longer than other brands?

UVT assist cords are longer so the hook sits near the middle of the jig, where most strikes happen. When the cord is connected directly to the solid ring, the extra length positions the hook correctly along the jig's body. That improves hookup rates, reduces chafing, and gives you better leverage on the hookset.

Why are the solid rings rounded instead of pressed?

Rounded solid rings give your line a smooth connection point with no sharp edges. Pressed rings can leave edges that create friction and chafe your line over time. Going rounded reduces line wear and removes a common failure point when you tie directly to the ring.

Construction & Materials

What makes UVT jigs strong and consistent?

UVT jigs start with stamped lead, are cast in precise molds, and are finished with a durable epoxy coating. Consistent lead gives every jig the same density, weight, and balance, so it falls correctly and keeps its intended action every drop. The epoxy finish protects against impact, wear, and corrosion, so the jig holds its shape under heavy pressure.

Lower-quality or mixed lead can vary in density, which changes how a jig falls and fishes. Starting with verified material removes that variable.

What does "stamped lead" mean?

Stamped lead is lead that the supplier has certified and marked to verify its composition and purity. Buying it stamped means we know exactly what goes into every jig, with no unknown or recycled material. The result is jigs that weigh, fall, and perform the same way every time.

How to Fish UVT Jigs

What size jig should I use?

Start with 1 gram per foot of water depth. In 200 feet of water, that means a 200g jig. From there, adjust for current, drift, wind, and the size of the bait. Go heavier to hold bottom in strong current or a fast drift, and lighter in calm conditions.

What weights do UVT Tuna Jigs come in?

Captain Cory's Tuna Jigs come in 60g, 90g, 120g, 150g, 180g, 220g, 280g, and 320g. The Shore Catch full-glow colors also come in 450g and 500g, plus 450g and 500g Tile Fish Beast Hunter versions that come pre-rigged for deep-drop fishing. Availability varies by color.

What's the difference between the UVT Tuna Jig and the Tile Fish Jig?

The Tile Fish Jig is built for deep-drop fishing, while the Tuna Jig is built to work the whole water column. Tile Fish Jigs come only in 450g and 500g so they get down deep and stay there. They're rigged with a top hook and a bottom hook to increase hookup ratios, and they come only in glow colors to light up the dark water where tilefish feed.

Where in the water column should I fish the jig?

Start at the depth where you're marking fish, then work other levels until you get bit. Fish can hold anywhere from the bottom to mid-column to near the surface. Watch your line on the drop, since many strikes come as the jig falls, and vary your retrieve speed until you find what the fish want that day.

What knot should I use to tie on a UVT jig?

Captain Jesse shows how to tie a UNI knot to connect your leader directly to the solid ring in our UNI knot tutorial.

Choosing a Jig Color

What are UVT's most popular jig colors?

Our three best sellers are Shore Catch (Full Glow) Electric Chicken, Shore Catch (Full Glow) Pink Bubble Gum, and Glass (Full Glow). All three colors are full-glow jigs that stand out at depth and in low light. Glass uses a clear body with a prism flash that mimics light coming off fleeing baitfish.

How do I choose the right jig color?

Every color has its day, so start by matching the bait the fish are feeding on. Natural patterns like Anchovy, Sardine, and Sand Eel work best when fish are keyed on small bait in clear water. Flash colors like Glass and Silver Shiner shine on bright days, and full-glow colors like Electric Chicken, Pink Bubble Gum, and Squid Pink stand out in deep water, low light, or stained water.

Proven Species

What species have been caught on UVT jigs?

UVT jigs have caught bluefin, yellowfin, bigeye, and blackfin tuna, plus striped bass, black sea bass, amberjack, tilefish, snowy grouper, queen snapper, and yellowedge grouper. They're built to perform from inshore to offshore to deep drop. Caught something on a UVT jig that isn't listed here? Let us know, and we'll add it to the list.
